ROUTINE Dental Cleaning

What can I Expect?

A routine dental cleaning is a key part of maintaining a healthy, confident smile. During this procedure, one of our dental hygienists will remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surfaces of your teeth—especially those hard-to-reach areas that regular brushing and flossing might miss. After scaling, your teeth are polished to remove surface stains, followed by a professional flossing to ensure your gums are clean and healthy. Regular cleanings—usually every six months—can also help prevent more serious dental issues and reduce the risk of gum disease over time.

At this appointment, other preventative measures may be used, such as dental x-rays, oral cancer screenings, periodontal (gum) screenings, or fluoride treatments. The cleaning procedure in combination with the other preventative measures will allow us to give you the best care possible, and you can be confident that you are on the right track with your oral health.

What is Periodontal Disease and how is it treated?

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the gums, bone and supporting structures around the teeth. It typically begins as gingivitis—characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums—and, if left untreated, can progress to periodontitis, where the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that could ultimately lead to tooth loss. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition. In its early stages, cleanings and improved at-home care (twice daily brushing and flossing) may reverse the inflammation and stabilize the condition. More advanced cases may require "deep" cleanings (scaling and root planing), localized antibiotics, or even surgical procedures to stop the progression of the disease. In our office, we regularly screen patients to make sure they are not at risk of periodontal disease.
